A Physical Low bottomed out early in the decade and the Cycle remained in in 4th Quarter
Alternatives until an Upward Crossover at the end of the decade. The Emotional High ended its 1st Quarter Foundation with a peak in the latter part of the decade that began its 2nd Quarter Variation. An Intellectual Low also bottomed out early in the decade and joined the Physical Cycle in a Physo-Intellectual Double 4th Quarter Alternatives that prevailed from most of
the 1850s. |

Melville revealed inhumane
conditions in the on sailors in "White Jacket"

on sailors and
Congress
abolished flogging in the Navy in the
Physical Low.
With the

the
first national convention of women advocating woman suffrage was held in Worcester, Massachusetts,
and in July the first woman's rights convention met in Seneca Falls, NY. Hawthorne's
classic novel "The Scarlet Letter," attacked Puritan hypocrisy in the
Intellectual 3rd Quarter Review.
In the
Physo-Intellectual
Double 3rd Quarter Review, Congress debated the the right of states and
territories to permit or prohibit slavery, the Compromise of 1850 passed to
allow more free states into the Union, and the effective Fugitive Slave Act abolished
slavery in the District of Columbia. |

as Stephen Foster wrote "My Old Kentucky Home." Harriet Beecher Stowe's
novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," profoundly influenced abolition in

the American, or Nativist party began attracted more supporters as an
alternative party, then it disbanded in 1858 at the end of the Quarter. |

Americans dress down in a
Physical Low
and in June of this year Secretary of State William Marcy
instructed all American diplomats abroad to be modest in their dress while in
court in
order to promote a popular image of the US as a democracy as they appear in the
"simple dress of an American citizen." The School of Music was founded in New
York, and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra organized in this
Emotional 1st Quarter Foundation.
Mrs. Amos Bronson Alcott with seventy-three other women presented a petition
calling for the urge suffrage to
the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention in the
Emotional High.
Antioch College opened, and in a departure long standing norms, it welcomed both
male and female students in the
Emotional High

Now that no Cycle was in 3rd Quarter Review, the Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820
that allowed some states to be admitted as slave-free states (passed during a
previous Physical 3rd Quarter Review), as Congress all territories can decide whether to permit or prohibit slavery
in the
Physo-Intellectual
Double 4th Quarter Alternatives. Act is condemned by abolitionists.

Territorial expansion can follow the Physical Cycle, and the America's "Ostend Manifesto" (written in 1854)
undermined attempts to acquire Cuba in the
Physical Low.
James Sims, a surgeon, organized the Women's Hosp of New York City in the
Emotional 1st Quarter Foundation,
and the Elmira (New York) Female College was established as the first higher
education institution to grant academic degrees to women. Mrs. Carl Schurz, who studied the kindergarten methods of Friedrich Froebel in Germany, orgs the first Am kindergarten. It is a German-speaking school, located in a Watertown, Wisconsin home.
James Bicheno Francis did searching experiments that led to
Modern Engineering with his "Lowell Hydraulic Experiments" in the

E 1st: 6/17-19/56 The new Republican party held its first National Convention in Philadelphia

Massachusetts. The last presidential candidate of the Whig Party was Millard Fillmore

4,932 businesses failed this year, and 4,222 businesses failed

. The Hudson River School of painting
was enhanced by the

and by paintings like "Niagara" by Frederick E. Church in which
he utilized his theme of natural wonders. |
